Join Marcus Newton for a city walking tour

Marcus Newton has lived in Sheffield all his life. He’s seen the city go through some changes. He knows the paths that lead through its history, the marks that reveal its past lives amidst streets that today make up its urban heart. In 2013 Marcus started taking walking tours around Sheffield, sharing his familiarity, his interest and his tips with its visitors.

The Sheffield City Walking Tours prove about as enlightening to the city’s residents as they do to its visitors. Marcus leads people to places and histories that are a little hidden, that a local could walk past day after day without noticing or thinking anything of – like significant metalwork from the city’s past and present, on display in the Town Hall; like a former 19th century synagogue, just off a Georgian Square, that sticks to paths that were laid down centuries back into the area’s rural past. It’s not a history tour, though; Marcus loves the Sheffield that’s grown out of that past and exists today, and along the way shares recommendations on its shops, galleries, cafes, theatres, routes – tailoring them to appeal to whoever happens to have joined him on the tour that morning.

In the afternoon, Marcus also offers pre-bookable tours – email Marcus if you’re interested as the slots often fill up in advance with enthusiastic groups of students or coach loads of retirees at leisure. If you're after a longer walk that's more countryside than city, an occasion tour on Sundays or Mondays or a full day's walk, get in touch with Marcus about his bespoke tours.

Next time you have a free morning in town, look out for Marcus (the one wearing the Sheffield City Walking Tours jumper) at the Surrey Street entrance to the Winter Garden, join him for around an hour and a half of walking, and start to see the city differently.
