Hire a set of wheels and go for a ride

Bikes are a great way to see what a city like Sheffield has to offer. Their ease of use makes them ideal for exploring both urban and rural landscapes.

Faster than walking and healthier, greener and more affordable than cars, bikes allow people to see a city or the countryside in any way they want – from a quick zip around the sights, to a relaxed afternoon’s entertainment with the family.

What’s more, in Sheffield there are no shortage of routes, parks, bridleways, woodlands and paths that lend themselves perfectly to two wheels.

Thankfully, there are plenty of options available to those who don’t have their own bike in Sheffield or to visitors to the city who arrive without a bicycle. Those businesses that offer bike rental are reliable and knowledgeable while, importantly, their equipment is safe and of a good standard. Bike hire is a remarkably cheap form of entertainment, with prices starting at just a few pounds per hour.

Bang in the centre of Sheffield, right next to the train station, is Russell’s Bike Shed – popular with commuters and visitors alike. Russell offers bike storage but also has a huge selection of quality bikes to hire, each one given a name beginning with ‘R’.

There are dozens of activities to take part in at Rother Valley Country Park and cycling is a great way to see all corners of the lake and nature reserve from safe paths which loop and interweave around the water’s edge. Bikes can be picked up near to the main park office.

For a retro ride, get in touch with Glory Days. They have a beautiful selection of vintage bikes and deliver to the door in both Sheffield and the Peak District.

Further out, Hassop Station, near Bakewell, has been converted into a visitor’s centre, cafe and bike hire office. Pick up a bike, or even a tandem, and take it along the Monsal Trail, a converted stretch of the former Midland Railway that passes for 8.5 miles over viaducts and through hillside tunnels, stations and stunning scenery.
